摘要: The objective of this study was to evaluate the effectiveness of geosynthetics in terms of reinforcement, separation, and drainage for roadways constructed in cold regions where the aggregate base course is thicker than investigated in previous studies. This project goes beyond previous work by evaluating the effectiveness of geosynthetics as reinforcement, separation, and drainage layers in paved roadway sections with subbases ranging from 580 to 640 mm thick (23 to 25 in). The study was performed on a 3.0 km (1.9 mile) portion of U.S. Route 1A in the towns of Frankfort and Winterport, Maine. The subsurface exploration revealed weak subgrade soil with an AASHTO classification of A-6 and an average laboratory CBR value of 3. The project evaluated four different geosynthetics: reinforcement geogrid, high strength geotextile; heavy weight nonwoven geotextile, and drainage geocomposite. The project was instrumented to monitor the performance ’of the geosynthetics. Loadcells attached to the geogrid showed that most of the force developed during placement and compaction of the first lift of overlying aggregate. Strain gages attached to the high strength geotextile showed similar results, although there was some evidence that the force per unit width increased somewhat with time. Overall the force in the pogrid and high strength geotextile was only a small fraction of the ultimate strengths of the materials. Piezometer readings showed that a drainage geocomposite placed 450 mm (18 in.) below subgrade may have been effective in reducing pore water pressures. Falling weight deflectometer results were I inconclusive in evaluating the effects of the geosynthetics. Further monitoring will be conducted to evaluate long term performance.
