Washington, D.C.-Lawmakers and stakeholders took turns laying out their priorities during a House subcommittee hearing on the next Water Resources Development Act (WRDA). Rep. Sam Graves (R-Mo.), chairman of the House Transportation and Infrastructure Committee and whose district is bordered by the Missouri and Mississippi rivers, said the current river management incorrectly prioritizes fish and wildlife over the protection of people and property. Graves said that has led to wasting tax dollars on supersized science experiments instead of responsibly investing the funds in restoring levees and increasing flood resilience. "Addressing that will be a top priority of mine throughout the development of WRDA 2024," he said. Rep. Grace Napolitano (D-Calif.), the ranking member of the Water Resources and Environment Subcommittee that held the hearing, spoke of elevating the water supply and water conservation mission of the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers. |
