The intention of this project was to develop a baseline for a fire test procedure for water spray systems to be installed on vehicle decks on board ship. The report describes a large scale ro-ro vehicle deck fire test conducted at SP. The test set-up simulated actual conditions on a vehicle deck. A small petrol pool fire was ignited and the fire spread to the cargo of a freight truck. A water spray system in accordance with IMO Res A.123(V) was installed at the ceiling. The system was manually operated approximately a minute and a half after ignition of the pool fire. The result showed that the water application density required by Res A.123(V) is not sufficient, neither to control the heat release rate of a petrol pool fire nor a freight truck commodity fire. The water application rate is also insufficient to limit the temperature exposure from such fires to the structure of a ship. All the observations made during the tests highlights the need for r fully automatic fire
protection system for vehicle decks.
The described test set-up forms a basis for development of a fire test procedure for alternative water spray systems to be installed on vehicle decks.
The second objective of the project was to establish quantitative “pass/fail” test criteria. The criteria recognised by IMO have been that; “The system should be capable of suppressing fires in flowing petrol, preventing fire spread from the vehicle of fire origin and reducing the temperature of exposure from the fire on the structure of the ship to an acceptable level.”. Proposed quantitative pass/fail criteria are presented within this report.
