摘要: Southwest Research Institute (SwRI) demonstrated the feasibility of using closed-loop three-way catalyst (TWC) technology on off-road large spark-ignited (LSI) engine applications (gasoline and liquified petroleum gas powered engines greater than 25 horsepower) to meet the California State Implementation Plan for Ozone (SIP) emission reduction goals. SwRI formed a Technical Advisory Committee, made up of engine and equipment manufacturers and representatives from industry organizations, to provide information on technical issues. They recommended appropriate test cycles, and five representative engines were selected and baseline emission tested. They also calculated total feasible emission reductions. SwRI determined the retail price equivalent (RPE) for the recommended emission control technology, calculated the cost-effectiveness, and recommended the necessary emission standards (non-methane hydrocarbon plus oxides of nitrogen and carbon monoxide) to meet the SIP goals. SwRI designed, constructed, and emission tested two emission reduction systems that incorporated TWC and electronic fuel control. They then performed emissions durability testing to show the feasibility of these technologies to category equipment. Results showed that low emission levels could be achieved, easily meeting the Air Resources Board's newly adopted LSI emission standards.
