摘要: Many bridge failures occur due to hydraulics-related causes, the scour being the primary cause. Although scour appears like a simple concept, it has several different forms and can range from a natural phenomenon to being caused by man-made interventions in a river. Due to global warming and future climate changes, many regions across the World and India in particular will face extreme and changing rainfall patterns including frequent occurrence of Cyclones affecting coastal regions. The cyclones move into hinterland and deposit very heavy rainfall in the catchment areas of large and small rivers alike including estuaries, producing flash floods. Of late their frequency of occurrence and intensity increased since "Nineties'. The rivers of Indo-Gangetic plains too experience flash floods due to occasional Cloud bursts and landslides in the Himalayas. Thus both North Indian and Peninsular rivers experience occurrence of extreme floods, which cause failure of some bridges due to un anticipated scour of both pier and abutment foundations. In addition, failure and overtopping of bridges in the Arunachal Pradesh across the tributaries of Brahmaputra river occur due to cloud bursts which are under-reported. Other causes of bridge failure are man-made, attributed to encroachments on natural waterway due to urbanization, floating debris/trees, dredging on river bed for sand, cobbles and gravel and deforestation in catchments and some times dam bursts.
