摘要：	To reduce the accidents and fatalities on Indian roads/highways a coordinated and concerted approach by all the agencies needs to be taken. A lot needs to be done to educate, train and improve the behaviour of road users besides imposing enforcement measures. The highway Engineers also have to play a critical role so that appropriate safety measures are taken in the development of highways/ roads in the country. The raised median needs to be discouraged especially on highspeed corridors. Moreover, appropriate type of safety barriers (rigid, semirigid and flexible) needs to be provided depending upon the site-specific requirement. While providing safety barriers it should be ensured that these are able to meet the fundamental requirement of containment, redirection and safety of the users of errant vehicle. The placement, height etc. of the crash barriers are very crucial for safety of the road users otherwise it may be sheer wastage of money and may also act as a safety hazard, rather than safety devices.
