摘要: Traffic signals are one of the most important components in the enhancement of the performance of intersection capacity. Traffic signalization is one of the best alternatives among other options of traffic engineering measures. It comes second among the options of different intersection control measures with respect to cost and in the order of priority. The first and the third options are considered to be roundabout and grade separation respectively. Many times vehicles at signalized intersections witness high degree of idling due to waiting at the approach arms as a consequence of unscientific green time allocation. It is therefore important to understand a mechanism which allocates appropriate traffic cycle time based on range of traffic flow at different phases. This paper aims to develop this mechanism which would enable traffic police to set signal cycle times based on different ranges of traffic flow volume. This paper develops equations for acceptable levels of vehicular delay for a three-arm intersection as against the cycle time. The study was conducted by installing CCTV cameras at vantage points of a three legged intersection as part of an experiment to capture the continuous movements of traffic flow approaching at three arms of the junction located in the southern part of Delhi. Data related to traffic flow like stopped delay from each arm was extracted to arrive at the average intersection delay. Classified traffic volume count was extracted from video recording to estimate the vehicular delay of different type of vehicles.
