摘要: With the growth in the road networks, vehicular volume and accident severity index, the importance of road safety and crash mitigation measures needs to be considered paramount in India. A systematic approach and implementation of precise corrective measures are the keys to reduce the fatality on road. No mitigation measure on the road will be complete without the usage of road signs and pavement markings. These are the measures that can effectively communicate to the road user about the physical condition of the road ahead and guide the user to make the right decision for safe navigation through the road alignment. Literature has highlighted the importance of these cost-effective/low-cost road safety measures and has statistically proved the reduction in road accident rates and improvement in road network due to the presence of these attributes on roads. Unfortunately, the importance of these measures is not frequently discussed in the Indian scenario. This raises the need for study on cost-effective/low-cost road safety measures on the Indian road network. The perception of users on the safety measures under Indian traffic scenarios and characteristics is also important while deciding the precise remedial measures. Among the numerous road safety solutions, five attributes have been considered in this study, namely, application of warning signs, regulatory signs, chevron signs, raised pavement markers/road studs and pavement markings on the road network. Empirical relationships between road safety and cost-effective measures are analysed and the need for cost-effective road safety solutions are explained from the perception of users.
