India, in the past century, has witnessed consequential progress in road infrastructure owing to intensive urbanisation. The increased demand has directed research for designing road networks fulfilling not only the criterion of strength but also its long-term performance under diverse conditions. There has been a rapid change in the materials used and road construction emerged as an elementary area for recycling industrial waste products. Concrete being the cynosure material component for rigid pavements needed proper understanding concerning the material's potential in conjunction with the effects it has on the environment. As far as pavement construction is concerned, in addition to the unique design mix, comes the challenges of construction and maintenance thereafter. This paper is a detailed representation of the discrete materials used and techniques adopted for rigid pavement construction. A humble effort has been made to discuss the factors affecting the performance of rigid pavements in terms of mix design, the construction procedure, durability issues and relevant Indian Standard provisions currently in practice. The discussion has been limited to the Pavement Quality Concrete (PQC) layer mainly for Jointed Plain Concrete Pavement (JPCP). |
