摘要: Road crashes account for an estimated 1.35 million deaths and 50 million injuries worldwide each year, with over 90 percent of the reported deaths occurring in developing countries. The cost of road accidents is borne not only by the victims and their family, but by the economy as a whole in terms of untimely deaths, injuries, disabilities and loss of potential income. According to World Bank statistics, in low and middle-income countries alone, deaths and serious injuries cost economies 1.7 trillion dollars and over 6.5 percent of Gross Domestic Product (GDP). In India the unprecedented rate of motorization and growing urbanization fueled by high rate of economic growth have compounded the problem. A large number of people in the prime of their lives, who could have contributed to the progress of society, are killed in such road accidents. During the calendar year 2021, road crashes in India claimed 153972 lives and caused injuries to 3,84,448 persons. India ranks at the top with highest number of fatalities with about 11% share in the world, on an average, with 1130 accidents and 422 deaths every day or 47 accidents and 18 deaths every hour. The number of road accidents in 2021 increased by 12.6 percent on an average compared to previous year 2020. Similarly, the number of deaths and injuries on account of road accidents increased by 16.9 percent and 10.39 percent respectively.
