California Bearing Ratio (CBR) is a vital factor in flexible pavement design. It indirectly indicates the subgrade strength. The present study focuses on laboratory CBR tests on the expansive soil Black Cotton (BC) soil under soaked and unsoaked conditions. Effects of surcharge and compaction efforts on the CBR values are examined. As per the IS 2720 (Part 16), though 96 hours is specified as the soaking period, soaking up to 144 hours is carried out because the soil completed 100 % swelling at 120 hours. The total swelling of 16.17 %, 14.32 %, 12.6 %, and 9.81 % are observed in heavy compactions under the surcharge load of 2.5 kg, 5 kg, 7.5 kg, and 10 kg, respectively, upon 120 hours of soaking. While in light compactions, the swelling is reduced to 9.08 %, 6.23 %, 4.95 %, and 4.05 % for surcharge loads of 2.5 kg, 5 kg, 7.5 kg, and 10 kg, respectively. As per the conventional trend, unsoaked CBR values are more for more surcharges with higher compaction efforts. The test results show that as the surcharge load increased from 2.5 to 10 kg, soaked and unsoaked CBR values increased by 142.3 % and 92.82 %, respectively, for light compactions, while for heavy compactions, these CBR values increased by 109.5 % and 78.9 %, respectively. Under soaked conditions, opposite to the conventional trend in CBR values are noticed for heavy and light compaction, i.e., less CBR for heavy compaction and more CBR for light compaction. This reverse trend observed in the case of soaked CBR for heavy compaction may be attributed to more surface area per unit volume of soil grain. |
