Right turning vehicles often cause delay to other movements at unsignalised intersections in countries following right hand drive, especially in a mixed traffic scenario. This is where an exclusive Right Turn Lane (RTL) can improve the performance of an unsignalized intersection. This study tries to establish volume warrants for exclusive right turn lane based on threshold delay for a rural unsignalised T-intersection, in mixed traffic conditions. A micro-simulation model, prepared using VISSIM and calibrated against delay and queue length data, which are collected from the study area, is used to develop various delay data points corresponding to variations in traffic volume. Benefits of providing a right turn lane is also evaluated using the developed model. Promising evidence to significant reduction in delay, emissions and fuel consumption are observed when an exclusive RTL provided. |
