Reinforced earth retaining structures (RE) are widely used in the construction of approaches of flyovers and bridges especially along National Highways and Expressways. The main advantage of RE wall structures is its high load (static and dynamic) carrying capacity, structural flexibility, good aesthetic appearance and can be constructed to greater heights in a restricted area within a very short period. Sometimes, it is observed that RE wall structures indicate wall instability/different types of failure conditions/possibilities, leading to sudden collapse of the RE wall structure. It is very essential to assess the failure condition initially, which will help in taking precautions leading to long term durability of RE walls A study was carried out to diagnose the causes of failure in some of the seventeen RE walls constructed along a Four lane National Highway of 300 km length. The constructed structures included both vertical and walls with surcharge slope. Field investigation was carried out by collecting different parameters which might have caused the failure viz., quality of backfill/slope/filter materials, surface and subsurface drainage measures, outward movement of facia panels, Cracking and bulging of facia panels, settlement in surcharge slope, etc. It was observed that lapses in design details, improper drainage measures, poor quality of backfill material etc. resulted in failure of RE walls besides other causes. The paper presents the different types of data collected during Reconnaisance survey and also discuss the causes and remedial measures which needs to be implemented for the long term durability of reinforced earth structures. |
