In many countries like India, large rivers have to be crossed, often requiring bridges of 6 to 10 km length. Extradosed bridges are fast becoming the popular alternative when the main spans are in the range of 100 to 200 m. Such long bridges require many expansion joints to permit deck movements due to temperature, shrinkage and creep. For multi-span configurations some piers located far from the null points can be supported on bearings to allow movements. Another option is to use expansion joints with "needle beams" located at mid-spans of Extradosed bridges resulting in equal spans throughout the bridge length. Both these configurations are unsatisfactory from the structural point of view. This paper discusses why these options are unsuitable and some of the options of structural arrangement that can be employed to overcome these difficulties. |
