Mineral filler is an integral part of bituminous mixes which could be termed as the finest part of the aggregates. The physical and chemical properties of filler as well as its interaction with other components of the mixes dictate the cost, constructability and performance of the bituminous mixes against primary distresses. However, the Indian criteria for the selection of the optimum filler and its quantity in the mix are quite shallow and could not reliably predict the performance of the prepared bituminous mixes. Hence this study analyzes the influence of various physical and chemical properties of fillers on performance of bituminous mixes by reviewing numerous local and global studies. It also compared several pavements design guidelines adopted by different countries with the' Indian MoRTH Specification to deduce its advantages and shortcoming. Finally, the study provides the vital suggestions as well as proposed an alternative criterion for the current guidelines to enhance their reliability. |
