A survey of available methods for emission measurements of heavy-duty vehicles (HDVs) has been peformed. The primary focus has been on measurements of real-world emissions. Each method has been evaluated with respect to its applicability for emission factor determination and with respect to in-use conformity testing of HDVs. Most of the investigated real-world methods are rather ill suited to deliver results in brake specific emissions, which is the unit used for HDV engine certification tests. A breakthrough for real-world methods with respect to emission factor determination would therefore require emission inventory data for HDVs to be based on some other unit e.g. grams per litre fuel burned or grams per ton-kilometre. |
