The sustained presence of free water in the foundation layers of a pavement can be detrimental to the entire pavement structure. The presence of water can lead to a loss of substructure support, fatigue cracking, stripping, faulting, pumping, and various other surface distresses. The challenge of removing this water from the foundation layers of a pavement has confronted pavement designers and engineers since the construction of the first hard surfaced road. Many concepts and materials have been produced to address the issue of water in pavement structures. Pipe underdrains, french drains, impermeable subbase materials, geotextile fabrics, pavement sealers, and other products have been developed to try and keep water out of the pavement structure. |
