The objective of this study and software development project was to improve safety capability by identifying the relationship between several roadway characteristics and safety. The Critical Analysis Reporting Environment (CARE) software was used as the information mining engine to perform the analysis. Relationships were obtained between crashes, average daily traffic (ADT), shoulder surface type, number of lanes, lane width, outer and inner lane superelevation, average grade, sag/crest, and pavement friction. The entire roadway was modeled so that characteristics of crash locations could be compared with those at non-crash locations within specific ADT ranges. This enabled the determination of potentially hazardous locations prior to any crashes occurring. For example, a cross-tabulation of curvature and superelevation enables identification of locations where extreme negative superelevation occurs on sharp curves. |
