This study examined the structure, roles, characteristics, and activities of public transit boards in the fulfillment of their fiduciary roles and responsibilities. A questionnaire was sent to randomly selected transit agencies within the United States. A statistical analysis was performed on the questionnaires that were returned. The analyses indicate that members of transit boards studied understand their roles and are conscious of their responsibilities of helping transit systems accomplish their strategic and operational objectives. When compared to boards of private sector organizations, the study found differences in some areas that are related to board roles and activities supporting roles. These include composition, compensation, interpersonal relationships among board members, educational activities, knowledge of employees, and the professions that work in the transit systems and formality of the strategic decision-making process. |
