摘要: The Alaska Department of Transportation and Public Facilities (AKDOT&PF) investigated the effectiveness of remote data collection technology to optimize the deicing and anti-icing material distribution methods in the Juneau, Alaska area. Researchers customized an in-vehicle remote data collection system provided by ThomTech Design, Inc. to collect objective data on meteorological conditions and deicing and anti-icing material distribution rates. The researchers also used an evaluation module of the remote data collection system to collect subjective data on the effectiveness of the snow/ice control treatments. The study team then analyzed this data with ArcVIEW GIS software to reveal opportunities to optimize the performance and cost effectiveness of AKDOT&PF's regional snow and ice control program. . The study revealed that remote data collection technology promises to be an effective tool for optimizing the cost effectiveness of snow and ice control treatments in Juneau, Alaska. Additional data collection and analysis are necessary to more clearly establish performance and cost effectiveness of various treatments in Juneau's variable winter climate.
