The Aviation and Transportation Security Act, Public Law 107-71, mandates the Transportation Security Administration (TSA) to enhance and improve screener training and performance. The factors encompassing screener performance include knowledge, skills, and abilities, as well as machine performance. The equipment that the screeners use must be in proper working condition in order for the screener to be successful. The TSA is responsible for providing equipment standards and for ensuring that the standards are met. The American Society for Testing Materials (ASTM) recently updated the test object for evaluating X-ray image quality (ASTM F792-82/88 Test Step Wedge). The new ASTM F792-01 Test Kit is a more comprehensive test object consisting of nine separate tests, one of which parallels the original ASTM F792-82/88 Test Step Wedge. The new test kit needs to be evaluated using X-ray systems in the field to establish the utility of the kit for use as the new TSA imaging standard. |
