The research products from the Strategic Highway Research Program (SHRP) included a new set of specifications for aggregates, asphalt binders, and asphalt mixtures. Collectively, this system is referred to as Superpave. This new system for selecting, designing, and specifying asphalt mixtures is now being used widely throughout the United States. However, limited field performance information was available at the time of this study for pavements constructed according to the Superpave system. As a result, PENNDOT and the asphalt paving industry jointly developed a field validation study that includes eight different sites with different traffic levels and construction techniques, located in different climatic zones with the state. As part of this study, an extensive instrumentation program was implemented. This report provides details regarding the selection, installation, and operation of the instrumentation installed in the pavement as well as the instrumentation used to monitor the environmental conditions at each of the sites. The report also includes baseline measurements and a description of the ancillary equipment (transverse pavement profile and vehicle position and speed) that is required to obtain field load-associative measurements. |
