Best management practices (BMPs) are activities, practices, maintenance procedures, and other management practices designed to prevent or reduce the pollution of air and water. The Pennsylvania Department of Transportation (PennDOT) is required to select erosion and sediment control devices from a list of approved best management practices. Some of the practices are required at all construction sites regardless of their effectiveness. The intent of this study, 'Evaluation of Approved Erosion and Sediment Controls to Determine Best Management Practice,' was to develop evaluation and measurement procedures to effectively assess BMPs that are planned in conjunction with Interstate 99 (I-99) construction and identify erosion and sediment control measures that are appropriate for use in a public highway environment. This report presents the progress and results obtained during Phase I of the project. The report provides a literature review, the site and parameter selection, and a preliminary set of data, as well as initial observations made by the authors at the various sites and measures. |
