Certain aspects of curved and skewed bridge behavior, especially during construction, are still not completely understood. There is also a general lack of field data on the behavior of these structures under both dead and live loads. The I-99 Advanced Technology Test Bed offers a unique opportunity to actually study curved and skewed bridges both during construction and while in service. A total of five bridges are being field monitored and tested in association with Work Order 79, with two of the structures being horizontally curved steel bridges and three being skewed bridges with either steel or prestressed concrete girders. This document: (1) provides a detailed review of available literature, design guidelines and specifications for curved and skewed bridges; (2) gives detailed descriptions of the structures that are being examined; (3) outlines and presents preliminary results from a companion numerical study examining the effects of geometric imperfections on curved bridged behavior; (4) presents a detailed work plan for the project; (5) discusses preliminary analyses and resulting instrumentation plans for the five field-monitoring structures; and (6) discusses instrument calibration that was performed in anticipation of the field monitoring and testing. |
