In 2001, 42,116 persons were killed, and an additional 3.0 million persons were injured in motor vehicle crashes in the United States. Motor vehicle injuries are the leading cause of death for individuals from ages 5 through 27. Motor vehicle crashes are the principal cause of on-the-job fatalities, and are the leading cause of unintentional death in the United States. Alcohol was involved in approximately 41 percent (17,448) of the total number of traffic fatalities and responsible for in excess of three hundred thousand injuries in 2001. The economic cost of motor vehicle crashes each year is more than $150 billion. NHTSAs goal is to reduce the number of alcohol-related motor vehicle crashes and resultingfatalities and injuries. In its on-going pursuit of achieving this goal, NHTSA continues its program of providing Technical Assistance Teams to states. This approach allows the states to use highway safety funds to support the teams evaluation of existing and proposed alcohol and drug-impaired driver control efforts. NHTSA acts as a facilitator, assembling a multi-disciplinary team of national experts who have demonstrated their competence in impaired driving program evaluation and development. The team conducts a comprehensive review of the States impaired driving program identifyingstrengths, areas in which the program can be improved, and provides recommendations to enhance the program. |
