Transit agencies all over America are increasingly recognizing the importance of diversity within their workplaces and the communities they serve. Transits customers and employees tend to reflect the different lifestyles, mobility needs, cultural backgrounds, ethnicity, gender, age, and other characteristics that have and continue to precipitate the demographic shifts in a region's topography. Many transit agencies have responded by developing diversity programs and initiatives to meet the needs of both public transit riders and transit employees. The objectives of the study were to identify diversity training initiatives and related performance measures and to understand how these initiatives might be linked to strategic business plans, executive level commitment, agency allocation of resources, and overall organizational and employee development. |
