This synthesis report will be of interest to state transportation departments and their staffs, as well as to the consultants that work in the areas of changing technologies. Its objective was to examine the impact that information and communication technologies are having on transportation agencies and to gather data to understand how agencies are dealing with these impacts. Four classes of technologies were examined: intelligent transportation systems, communication technology, software tools, and remote work arrangements. The synthesis was accomplished through a review of recent literature and a survey of representatives from state transportation agencies. Case studies in five state departments of transportation assisted in placing the findings from the literature review and survey in context. It documents the widespread use of many information and communication technologies and a general enthusiasm for their value to transportation departments, whereas at the same time it notes an undercurrent of concern about the adaptations that rapidly changing technology demands of transportation organizations and agency staff. |
