The growing demand for mobility in the Netherlands, and car mobility in particular, has carried with it an array of societal problems. In the search for ways to deal with the increasing need for mobility and the consequences of mobility growth, Dutch transport officials and experts tend to look at collective and multimodal passenger transport. Despite their potential to reduce the burden on existing roadways, however, the presently available multimodal transport systems do not seem able to produce the necessary service level demanded by many of today's travelers. A chain perspective on multimodal transport is proposed in this research as an appropriate and favorable way to make these transport systems more attractive. A chain perspective suggests, in short, looking at passenger transport from door to door when considering improvements in multimodal transport systems. A design effort aimed at improving multimodal transport systems requires looking across modal and often organizational boundaries. This implies that in many cases, several organizations, such as transport operators, public authorities and operators of activity locations, need to be involved in such an effort. A design approach for designing multimodal transport systems from a chain perspective is developed and explored in this thesis. |
