This report of the Transportation Research Board will be of interest to local, regional, state, and federal officials, as well as to other transportation professionals and the public who work with them in the area of traffic engineering. This report examines what impact red light running camera enforcement has had on crashes and related crash severity at intersections. No new data collection or analysis was performed. The information base came from published literature, various websites, and from responses to a questionnaire distributed to those jurisdictions known or believed to have installed red light running camera systems. Based on the information acquired and reviewed for this effort, it appears that red light running automated enforcement can be an effective safety countermeasure. However, there is currently insufficient empirical evidence based on statistically rigorous experimental design to state this conclusively. A panel of experts in the subject area guided the work of organizing and evaluating the collected data and reviewed the final synthesis report. A consultant was engaged to collect and synthesize the information and to write this report. |
