The 100th Meridian Initiative is a cooperative effort between state, provincial, and federal agencies to prevent the westward spread of zebra mussels and other aquatic nuisance species in North America. The Initiatives goals are to prevent the spread of these species west of the 100th Meridian which bisects the Great Plains from north to south and to monitor and control any nuisance species that are detected. The Initiatives activities include boater surveys, education, monitoring, rapid response, and risk evaluation. Boater surveys and monitoring are important because aquatic nuisance species can move from one water body to another by attaching themselves to boats and trailers. This report details the results of boat inspections, boater surveys, and other activities designed to track boat movement into, out of, and around the state of Colorado in 2006. This research is the first of its kind done in the state, and its results will be combined with data from other states to identify potential infestation routes and boater education sites. Additional research will be done in Colorado in 2007. |
