The report gives a systematic overview of systems categorized as Intelligent Transport Systems (ITS) according to effect-variables addressed, evaluation methods, samples and effects on behavior and/or accidents. The ITS-system addressed very considerably in terms of their degree of implementation, from Antilocking Brake Systems (ABS), which was introduced some 20 years ago and where the effects on accidents have estimated by meta-analysis, to AlcoLock where accident studies from real traffic still do not exist. The most comprehensive evaluations made relate to ABS, Intelligent Speed Adaptation (ISA) and several types of Variable Message Signs (VMS). Estimates from real traffic evaluations studies of specific IT-systems on the effect on accidents exist for the following systems: Accident Data Recorder ('Datalogger'), ABS, automatic speed control ('speed cameras'), Electronic Stability Control (ESC), individual and collective feedback signs of speed, pedestrian warning, warning of time headways, and Variable Message Signs (VMS). |
