Seventeen million anglers, 16 years of age and older, enjoyed their fishing from a boat in the varied fresh and marine waters of the U.S. in 2006. They spent over 246 million days on the water. This report presents an analysis of their boat use, expenditures, and selected demographic characteristics. For purposes of this report these individuals are referred to as boaters and the types of water fished on as either saltwater, Great Lakes, or freshwater (excluding the Great Lakes). All estimates herein came from the 2006 National Survey of Fishing, Hunting, and Wildlife-Associated Recreation (Survey). The Survey has been conducted since 1955 and is one of the most comprehensive databases on wildlife recreation in the U.S. The focus of the Survey is on anglers, hunters and wildlife watchers--not all outdoor enthusiasts. Therefore, this report only captures fishing from boats--not all recreational boating. |
