摘要: This report discusses how transportation policies can aggravate or alleviate social equity problems. Current transit systems (Detroit, Atlanta, Cleveland, Denver, and St. Louis) were studied with respect to their strategies and relative success in remediatiating social inequity as compared with Detroit's transit systems. The five cities were studied with respect to the number of employment opportunities available within transit distance. Not surprisingly, Detroit Metro was shown to offer fewer opportunities than elsewhere. A recommendation was made for more effective basic bus service in Metro Detroit as a means of improving job equity for residents. Social equity is tied to access to jobs and other destinations. In the past, this has limited employment and other opportunities for low-income residents and others with limited means of travel.
