The Office of Traffic Safety (OTS) in the Minnesota Department of Public Safety (DPS) administers federal funds provided by the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) under the State and Community Highway Safety Program (Public Law 89-564). The funds are used to change driver behavior by enforcing traffic laws; making the public aware of the dangers of crashes, the likelihood of receiving a ticket, and the best ways to reduce their risk; and leading or assisting state, county, and community efforts to improve traffic safety. In addition, OTS analyzes crash data, identifies at-risk populations, seeks out or crafts programs to reduce the risks, and evaluates the success of various traffic safety programs. |
