摘要: The Federal Highway Safety Act of 1966 directed the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) and Federal Highway Administration (FHW A) ofthe United States Department of Transportation to j ointly administer various highway safety programs and projects. This federal grant program provides funds administered thiough the Maine Department of Public Safety (MeDPS), Bureau of Highway Safety (MeBHS) to eligible entities to be used, in part, for traffic safety education and enforcement to decrease the deaths and injuries that occur on Maine roads and highways. The MeBHS is tasked with the responsibility of effectively administering and utilizing Section 402 State and Community Highway Safety Funds and related grant funds received from NHTSA and FHW A. These funds are to be used for planning, implementing and evaluating short-term behavioral highway safety programs and projects with the intent that other sources of funding will sustain these programs over the long-tenn. The MeBHS is the leader in coordinating the safety efforts offederal, state and local organizations involved in Maine traffic safety. Our programs are intended to improve the behavior of and instill a sense of responsibility in drivers, passengers, pedestrians and cyclists. Our goal is to ultimately reduce the number of fatalities, injuries and property damage costs caused by highway crashes.
