Oregon was awarded a Medical Liability & Patient Safety Planning Grant by the Agency for Healthcare Research and Quality (AHRQ) in September 2010 to explore how to improve patient safety and the medical liability system by using a legal safe harbor that gives medical guidelines a special status in the medical liability system. In essence, a legal safe harbor would provide greater clarity about the standard of care expected of medical professionals and, if they adhere to state-endorsed evidence-based medical guidelines, liability protection for resulting harms. The Office for Oregon Health Policy and Research (OHPR), with assistance from the Patient Safety Commission and the Center for Evidence-based Policy at Oregon Health and Sciences University (OHSU), led the grant planning process. |
