The research described in this report consisted of analysis and experimental testing of steel bridge details susceptible to fatigue and end regions of precast prestressed concrete girder ends subjected to reinforcement corrosion. Locations most affected by fatigue were identified and detailed analyses were conducted for four bridges. The Goodman fatigue evaluation showed that skewed bridge construction is more damaging to the steel cross-frame-to-girder component fatigue life than non-skewed construction. A localized pre-stressed carbon fiber reinforced polymer retrofit was developed that has the potential to extend the life of steel bridges having details susceptible to fatigue damage. Analyses and experimental testing successfully demonstrated the potential of this simple retrofit. A number of common deterioration items in the end region of girders were identified in through field investigations of precast, prestressed concrete girder bridges. A series of scaled prestressed concrete girder ends were subjected to an accelerated corrosion environment and were then comparatively shear tested with girder ends not subjected to corrosion. The results of these tests were inconclusive, but preliminarily indicated that minor corrosion did affect strand bond, but not shear capacity of these specimens. |
