The Transportation Data and Analytics Office of the Florida Department of Transportation operates traffic monitoring sites scattered throughout the state of Florida. Consequently, the Office is faced with the continuing challenge of maintenance, sustainability, modernization of processes and equipment, and assurance of the quality of data collected from these sites. This project was aimed at providing civil engineering support for the operation of the traffic monitoring sites by undertaking four major tasks: (1) evaluation of the performance of the Florida vehicle classification table implemented at these sites through various vendor equipment; (2) surveying State highway officials in the United States to solicit their experience with the operation of traffic monitoring sites and their experience with traffic data quality and assurance; (3) evaluation of weight data collected by weigh-in-motion (WIM) systems installed at the test site to determine the effect of the frequency of calibration on the quality of the collected WIM data; and (4) evaluation of new sealants for the installation of loops and piezos at the traffic monitoring sites. The report is divided into four chapters detailing the task undertaken, the results obtained, and the recommendations made. A number of recommendations have either been implemented or are under consideration for deployment with the purpose of improving the performance of the traffic monitoring sites. |
