The purpose of this research is to examine the procurement and transportationcosts of AM-2 airfield matting in relation to an emerging technology, biocement.Biocement formation involves a process found in natural soil and marine bacteria, whereurea and calcium chloride are converted into a naturally-produced cement. BioMASONis a commercial company that is harnessing this process to conduct the rapid constructionof airfield taxiways, ramps, and runways. As our near-peer adversaries continue tochallenge our flexibility and resolve, any technology that could provide a more agile andcost-effective capability to meet similar results is paramount. Upon completion of thisreview, readers will understand the benefits of this technology and its expeditionaryapplication in austere locations as well as any potential cost benefits to the Air Force. |
