Sandbars and islands provide important nesting and foraging habitat forbirds (including listed species) and shallow water habitat for many aquaticspecies in riverine ecosystems. In-stream habitat is especially important inincised channels lacking floodplain connectivity, with channel barsproviding important riparian habitat. However, some river managementpractices significantly alter and sometime eventually eliminate theseimportant habitats. Several US Army Corps of Engineers districts areplanning or actively building instream bars and islands using flowmanagement and/or instream structures. Sister agencies (e.g., US Bureauof Reclamation) have similar initiatives downstream of their reservoirstructures. This report outlines considerations for establishing andmanaging sandbar and island features. It presents a compilation of proventechniques for promoting sandbar and island development and forreducing erosion of these features. |
