Efficient Wireless Communication in Vehicular Environments |

There is growing interest in the development and deployment of short-range wireless technologies for vehicle-to-vehicle and vehicle-to-infrastructure communication for a wide range of vehicular safety and traffic control applications. This is evidenced by the development of new standards such as the IEEE 802.11p WAVE (wireless access for vehicular environments) operating in a dedicated 5.9GHz spectrum licensed explicitly for such use. In this project, we propose to develop two efficient wireless communication protocols that address the unique challenges of the vehicular networking environment: a medium access protocol that handles traffic density variations gracefully using power control, and a fast information dissemination protocol that exploits cooperative diversity. This is a Research Initiation Proposal. |
