Many countries have established and implemented legal truck weight limits for commercial vehicles to travel on their highways.They collectively refer to the limits on the truck gross weight,axle weights,and axle distances,as applicable.Not exceeding these limits,trucks may ravel without constraints within the jurisdiction.Overweight trucks are those exceeding the legal weight limits.Depending on jurisdiction,these trucks may or may not have to meet additional requirements to travel.This paper discusses research work recently performed in the US to manage overweight trucks and maintain highway bridge safety.An important feature of the effort is the usage of weigh-in-motion (WIM) measurement data of real truck weights and configurations in the relevant research work for enhanced quantitative decision making. |
