Investigation of Recycled Asphalt Pavement and Recycled Shingle Pavement Characterization Procedure & Development of Specification for Recycled Asphalt Pavement
摘要:
Rising costs of asphalt binder have revived interest in incorporating reclaimed asphalt pavement (RAP) and reclaimed asphalt shingle (RAS) into mixes. RAP and RAS already contain asphalt binder and aggregates that should be accounted for in designing a new pavement. The issue that arises is how to characterize RAP and RAS to adequately account for the benefits of RAP and RAS material in a mix design. There are several techniques available for characterizing RAP asphalt binder. The most prevalent method is conducting an extraction and binder recovery followed by performance grading of the recovered binder. There are two issues of concern associated with this method; 1) costly toxic chemicals are required for conducting a recovery, and 2)cost required to appropriately dispose of extraction and recovery materials. Recently, there has been research conducted on the possibility of using mix tests to characterize RAP properties. Some of these tests have been used in conjunction with the Hirsch model to estimate effective binder grade. The proposed research is to investigate the feasibility and appropriateness of using a mix test to characterize RAP and aid in selecting a virgin binder.
