Environmental protection is a key theme for any industry.In the automotive industry,the automobile makers have been working to develop new technologies.At the same time,lubricant manufacturers and additive companies have been working on the development of "Eco Friendly" lubricants,which can play an important role in fuel economy performance and exhaust gas after-treatment system compatibility.One of the key "Eco Friendly" performance areas of automotive engine oil is fuel economy.The method of screening this performance is important.To screen fuel economy performance,a motored friction torque test to evaluate additive formulations has been developed.This test was modeled after the Sequence Ⅵ D engine test in the ILSAC GF-5 specification by incorporating both fresh and aged fuel economy measurements.A bench scale screener for predicting fuel economy degradation in Sequence Ⅵ D was developed.Using the screener,additive formulations that showed improved fuel economy performance have been developed.Emission system compatibility is also a key performance criterion.In the ILSAC GF-5 specification,phosphorus volatility is also regulated with the same phosphorus content as in ILSAC GF-4 to secure wear protection. |
