Caltrans has tens of thousands of field stations collecting data throughout the state. Many or most of these field stations are generating at least partially invalid information according PeMS. Most of these problems are easily fixable - such things as loops mapped into the incorrect lane, adjacent channel crosstalk, or detector cards that appear to light up but don't register anything. These issues can often be easily mitigated by simply changing the settings or positions of the detector cards, or in some cases swapping them out. In extreme cases, much more expensive higher fidelity detector cards may be called for. In rare cases do the actual in the roadway loops need to be re-cut. Caltrans has a huge detector accuracy and validity problem waiting to be fixed. |
