摘要:   The topical ambiguity of the term "bridging the gap" manifests itself in the 35.6 km long Hongkong-Zhuhai-Macao Bridge, presently under construction, and in multiscale analysis of a 5.7 km long tunnel below the bottom of the South China Sea,interrupting the bridge for shipping.On the one hand, a topographical gap is being bridged while, on the other hand, several orders of magnitude in material mechanics of concrete are bridged by means of a modem mode of structural analysis.This is done in the framework of a joint research project of the Institute for Mechanics of Materials and Structures of Vienna University of Technology and the Department of Geotechnical Engineering of Tongji University, Shanghai, entitled as"Bridging the gap by means of multiscale structural analysis".The aim of this research project is to assess the added value of this timely mode of structural analysis.Selected results of this research in progress are presented in this contribution.
