Compared topure battery electric vehicles(BEV),plug-in-hybrid electric vehicles(PHEV)have the advantage of introducing both emission-free driving in cities and the flexibility for the occasional mid-or long-distance trip to areas without charging infrastructure. If PHEVs are charged frequently and driven electrically, the technology can help to reduce local emissions significantly, especially in big cities with a high proportion of short distance trips and low-speed driving.Additionally, supporting both BEVs and PHEVs with incentives would enable a faster replacement of the conventional vehicle, trigger a faster build-up of charging infrastructure and speed up the transition to E-mobility.In order to promote increased electric driving of PHEVs,in this paper,an innovative idea named eBenefit is proposed. The eBenefit system monitors and evaluates the share of pure electric driving. The evaluation is used to decide the level of incentives given to the customer. In order to evaluate the electricalperformance, several usage metrics are analyzed and compared in detail. An overall eBenefit sys-tem structure is presented to realize the calculation of these metrics and provide incentives back to the customer. We demonstrate that, with comparatively low implementation effort, the eBenefit system can be implemented using existing technologies like Real-Time Moni-toring(RTM)and Electronic Toll Collection(ETC).Within BMW,prototypes and demonstration projects were built to show the technical feasibility of the eBenefit program and to analyze whether PHEV customers can be motivated to charge more often using incen-tive systems.BMW is also investigating possibilities of eBenefit in a joint OEM project led by CATARC,and together with two other OEMs: SAIC and BYD. |
