Roundabouts are typically considered individually to address problems at a particular intersection or along only a portion of a roadway corridor. At the project level, little consideration is given to how roundabouts impact an overall roadway corridor or system. As a result, random inclusion of a roundabout may solve safety and operational problems at the intersection where it is implemented but may affect corridor or system performance overall. Currently no resources exist to assist agencies in assessing impacts of integrating roundabouts into a corridor or system. A well thought through system-wide plan will be an improvement to the random inclusion of roundabouts into the roadway system. In order to address this deficiency, this project will develop a toolbox as a resource to assist cities, counties, and other agencies in assessing the impact that implementing a roundabout or roundabouts has on a system or corridor as a whole. |
