This project will develop a seat belt safety curriculum that can be used in beginning English-As-A-Second Language (ESL) programs. ESL programs are taught throughout the United States at public libraries, schools, community centers, colleges, churches, universities, and elsewhere. Most students in beginning-level ESL classes are recent immigrants, often from countries with different traffic safety norms and laws where seat belt use is uncommon. This project will develop a seat belt safety curriculum tailored specifically for use in ESL programs. The curriculum will be developed with local ESL administrators in Dallas and will include extensive input from experts across the US and Canada as well as focus groups. Along with developing the curriculum, the project will develop strategies to overcome obstacles to incorporating the curriculum into ESL programs on a large-scale basis. The project will produce a self-contained "train-the-trainer" curriculum, along with classroom-ready materials that can be replicated in ESL programs throughout the United States and Canada. |
