Laser Cladding of Welds to Improve Railroad Track Safety
项目名称: Laser Cladding of Welds to Improve Railroad Track Safety
摘要: The purpose of this project is to explore the use of laser based technologies to reduce surface and near surface defects on welds, to help enhance rail safety and integrity and enable an increase in the rail life expectancy. The work is to be conducted with participation of the Transportation Technology Center, Inc. (TTCI), where tests will be conducted. This project will test and evaluate laser cladding on weld life expectancy. This could benefit the safety and efficiency of railroad operations. This project will focus on the installation and testing of laser technologies to reduce the detrimental effect occurring along the Heat Affected Zone (HAZ) produced by field welds. The use of laser cladding coatings has as a goal to develop a highly stiff surface along the welds and rail running surface to prevent plastic deformation along thermite welds, particularly at the HAZ.
